I’ve decided that I want to start documenting all of the antics that I’ve seen in the campus gyms, as well as all of the pretty awesome stuff I see. So here we go!
Preface: There are 4 gyms on campus. Helen Newman and Appel are on North campus where the freshman live, and they have squat racks and free weights but no area to deadlift and minimal benches. Noyes is on West Campus where the upperclassman live and I’ll probably never go to this year. Teagle is basically my dream gym, with platforms, bumper plates, a bazillion power racks and benches and well as a free weight area and a those gym machine things. However, it’s a 15 minute walk up a steep hill from my dorm, but it’s near my classes. I’ll probably go to Teagle on the weekdays after class and Helen Newman on the weekends.
Today I went to Helen Newman. There were bros a plenty, lots who knew what they were doing and those who did not. I went to a squat rack where someone casually left a bench just chilling. Why is it so hard to move the equipment back where you found it?! Anyways, some kind soul helped me move the bench out of the way and I started my squats.
Some guy started squatting in the squat rack next to me, with a towel wrapped around the bar and barely going down to quarter squats. All the while I quietly sat by doing ass to grass squats in my little rack, cringing at his form. Honestly a lot of the stuff I see at the gym that makes me cringe just makes me feel bad because no one’s told these people that what they’re doing is wrong. Like I want to help everyone become heavy ass squatting superstars, but I also want to respect their personal space to do their workout so it’s a conundrum. I think the solution is to become a personal trainer.
Then some kids (a group of 3 or 4 boys?) sent a representative to talk to me and ask me how many sets I had left because they wanted to use the rack to bench. I had a while left so I basically squashed their dreams of using the rack. Bad gym etiquette on my part? Possibly but ya know I’m using the squat racks for squats and I can’t really work them in with a bench. So oh well.
Then I went somewhere to do lunges and it was kinda crowded with benches but then there was this huge space of open floor to which I thought “ah what a perfect space for me to lunge.” And then some really tall guy comes and takes up the entire space doing curlz. Srsly.
Good things! Positivity! Some other guy moved his bench and made room for me to lunge. Yay for nice gym peeps.
I wasn’t the only girl lifting and it made me happy to see other badass ladies doing their thing.
I decided to try some isolation leg machines after I finished with all my barbell and dumbbell stuff. It just wasn’t the same. I really dislike machines. I also think that I’m too small for them. Like even when they’re all the way to the shortest position it’s still hard for me to get a full ROM.
I was in a funk this morning but after the gym I felt MUCH better about everything. Now it’s time to do some homework and just chill.
